Spain is still holiday destination number one for British tourists. Thanks to an abundance of cheap flights, affordable hotels, miles of sandy beaches and a warm and sunny climate, Spain’s popularity continues to grow. Even BA strikes and ash clouds can’t keep us away; we still want to go on holiday and most of us are still choosing Spain.
Although numbers were slightly down in 2009 due to a plummeting pound and the ‘staycation’ alternative, 2010 looks set to be a good year for the Iberian Peninsula. This is partly due to the momentary fall from favour Spain endured last summer. Because holiday companies, particularly hotels and flights had a tough time in 2008 and 2009, they are fighting back in 2010 and to get bums on seats and heads on pillows they are slashing prices, offering two-for-one deals and free upgrades and transfers. This can only means good things for us Brits who are long overdue a holiday.
Of course, it’s not just Spain that is vying for our pounds, but seeing as it has so much to offer it is likely to be the biggest winner. Bookings are already up to the Costas as well as popular cities such as Barcelona, Madrid, Seville and Bilbao.
So why do we still have this love affair with Spain? After all we can get cheap flights to hundreds of destinations across Europe all with better climates than the UK. Spain is usually viewed as having the whole package. It appeals to families as well as party lovers, the rich and famous and the budget conscious and city lovers to sun worshippers. It has also developed a name for itself as a worldwide golfing destination and thanks to Ibiza and Sonar in Barcelona, it is
the destination for clubbers. It also has a great reputation for water sports, notably kitesurfing and windsurfing thanks to contests held in the Canary Islands and its food is up their with Italian as being one of the most exported European cuisines in the world.
Because of this diversity, you can spend a week or two flitting between the beach and the city, or the country park and fishing village, the nightclub or shops and you will never get bored. It is also one of the most affordable countries in Europe still using the Euro. So if you want a holiday that has a little bit of everything then Spain has to be top of the list.
